type='text'>Phase 1 of the Bathroom Restoration -- Done!</title><summary type='text'>Ted's dad was over recently to help with the finishing touches on the bathroom restoration. We are not doing anything with the old cast iron tub at this time, except to clean it. We may, in the future, convert it to a walk in shower as Mom gets older, or we may just add more support bars, we're not sure yet. Whatever we do, that will be phase 2.

(Sorta)</title><summary type='text'>This was my least-favorite room of the house. It is the guest room off the kitchen, which back in the day may have been the maid's room. Even apartment-dwelling families in Chicago and Evanston sometimes had maids, so I've been told, and the bedroom by the kitchen was often set aside for them.

When we moved in, the trim was all painted blue. Baby blue. But, it's done. There's room for a desk out here now, and a few comfy chairs. It probably wouldn't be so bad if some previous owner didn't use peachy-flesh-colored enamel on everything. It's nearly impossible to pull up.

This week we had someone come by the house to see some old radio and TV tubes Joanne had on Craig's List. While the guy didn't take the tubes he told us he was having an estate sale just a few blocks away. Of course we had to go check it out. So glad we did. We just found the most awesome vintage sink on Craigslist. It came from a 1929 bungalow in Oak Park, where the owner was "upgrading" with another vintage piece. I love the whole steampunk look, with the arms that come up to a mixing faucet. We're going to use it in the basement, where we already have a 1920s toilet in a sort of half bath.

Another wild stormy rush hour yesterday. Three tornado warnings, severe storm warnings, lots of rain all during the rush hour commute. Thankfully, for us up on the North Shore, the action was south of Chicago. Although we did get our share of the rain and winds. After the storm we were gifted with a lovely double rainbow. The colors were very soft, almost blending into the gray sky.

It just hailed quarter-size ice chunks here, and guess who left her car on the driveway. Yeah. I'm not looking forward to inspecting it by light of day.

The rain and ice came down so fast and furious, that the drains in the garage backed up. When we checked the pit in the front yard, which we assume the drains are connected to, we found it had backed up to the surface.

Spring may be peeking around the corner but it's a little cold to really start working in the yard. Soooo . . . I took advantage of Joanne and Ted recently being away for a week and started painting the living room.  Like the rest of the house, we used Venetian Plaster. Goes on with a small trowel instead of brush or roller. Really lots of fun. The first is a wall hanging we have hanging on the back porch along with art work from family, friends and goodies from our trips. You begin stripping the paint off the bathroom door trim, and because it's only right, you strip the trim on both sides of the door at the same time. And as long as you're stripping the wood on the entryway side of the bathroom door, you decide to strip the trim on all six doors off the entryway at once.

Each solstice since we've been in The Box House (this is our third) we have wassailed the garden, whereby we drink a toast to the health of the fruit-bearing trees and sing to them so that they may produce abundant harvests the next year. Ted and I were at the condo to check out the old tenants, possibly do a bit of extra cleaning, and then check in the new set of tenants. What we discovered when we got to the unit was a landlord's worst nightmare.
