Sideboard Blues and a Standard Bathroom Sink, Too

Sunday night was garbage night, and about half a block up the alley I spotted this vintage sideboard:

It's an old piece by John M. Smyth, a Chicago-based furniture company that only recently closed after 140 years of operation. (Those who grew up around here no doubt remember their warbling theme song "John M. Smyth Ho-o-ome-makers!")

The veneer is chipped in a few places, which is why it was no doubt painted this stunning blue, although you can't see the chips unless you inspect it closely. I'll call it shabby chic.

Ted calls it crap.

Although he very kindly helped me haul it down the alley to the garage, I think he's starting to lose patience with my junk-collecting habit. Especially since I haven't had time to either rehome, resell, or refinish the pieces that are stacking up. We are finally ridding ourselves of the last few pieces of junk left behind by the previous owners, which means that maybe, just maybe, we can think about fitting a car in here.

But not if I keep bringing home stray pieces of furniture. But I just can't stand seeing perfectly usable, vintage pieces sitting in wait for the trashman. Soon, I'll be able to run a bungalow restoration and furniture store out of our garage!

So. Um. Does anyone need a vintage Standard bathroom sink?

You're just like me! Our garage is FULL... there IS no more space. Ah, well.

It's fun though, isn't it?

Garages are for junk, not for cars, you silly houseblogger.

No, don't need a sink. But I have been looking for a vintage sideboard.....preferably damaged or pre-painted so I can ruin it myself with more paint! Alas, it's a long drive to chicago. Karma points to you for rescuing it.

I love that sideboard!!!! Please tell me you'll repaint it a high gloss white or black...

Tell Ted to pipe down. LOL

Hmm, we're in the process of doing our basement bathroom and that just may work—is that a wall-mount?

Hi Denise! Yep, it's a wall mount. If you're interested, e-mail me at blog(a)compassrose.com and it's yours.

Hi Renovation Therapy! I think we managed to find a use for it, without having to repaint it. :-)

Hi Smiling Judy! Have you checked CraigsList.com? You can often find cheapy furniture on it.

Hi Christopher Busta-Peck! Smartypants. :-P

I almost envy your city living- finding good junk out in the alleys. I live in a rural area so finds are few and far between. My husband did find a neat old trunk on the side of the road one day and I got a free working made-in-Newton-Ia, Maytag, off of Craigslist. Your American Standard looks just like mine upstairs. :)

Good for you for taking in the strays! If nothing else, put them on Craigslist yourself for low, low prices and help someone just starting out put some nice furniture in their apartment.

I second AJS's sentiment, though for slightly different reasons.

I used to live in the Cleveland urb (it's too close to the city to be a suburb) of Cleveland Heights, which I would claim people put the best stuff out in the trash of what I've seen anywhere. Of course, if my wife was reading this, I'd claim that it was the most interesting trash, which she would agree with.

Now, I live in Shaker Heights, where they pick up trash from your back yard, so I can't be nosy and see what cool stuff my neighbors are thowing out. I guess I'll have to drive over to see my folks in Cleveland Heights on trash night.

Eek! I'm late to admire the sideboard - but I started drooling the minute I saw it. Paint that baby and enjoy it. Happy Thanksgiving, Joanne - I'm in your neck of the woods and thinking about red hots for lunch.

Loving the vintage bathroom sink. I would take if I wasn't so late and lived in the UK.

Bathroom Sink--I was out prowling the alleyways again last night for good trash, but haven't come across much of anything lately. :-( The sink was one of the better finds.

I guess you don't have that sink anymore? We have a very similar model in our home...looking for the hardware.

I did find a good home for the sink in a bungalow not too far from here. One of my neighbors is doing a gut rehab, so I'm keeping my eye out for anything good.
